Picture this scenario: You just got a bonus from work, and you've got 2 weeks off. You choose to drive cross country with our friends/family/pet, but your old car just isn't up to the task...
What sub $25,000 car would you pic for a cross-country trip, and why?
Personally, I'd pick a decently-appointed VW golf.
My ideal one would be a 4-door S with a sunroof. 1.8L Turbo-4 with 170hp, 200ft-lbs, attached to a 5-speed manual! Get's good mileage on the highway, and yet it can corner pretty well!
so oppo, what would you pick?

Focus ST.

I agree with the Golf... But even better would be a Jetta Sportwagen for a little more money. I don't think you need AWD to go on a cross country road trip so how about a base Mazda CX-5. Or even an Accord sport. Actually I want answers to this question lol

Manual Subaru Crosstrek. What new car under 25k would be able to take you off the beaten path?

I've done this properly...

2014 Mustang GT 420 HP 390 lb-ft and a six speed to the rear. Perfect budget road trip car.

I don't want to bring your friends and family on my road trip. No offense.

Well, if I'm taking my family, and had the extra $25K in my pocket for a new car, I'd probably go down to my local Dodge dealer and find a Caravan, put a hitch on it, then take the rest of the money I had left and buy a used camper to pull behind it.

Why get a new car when you can have a pristine one of these for half that?
And you'll have enough leftover $$$ so you can hoon all day long for the entire journey.
-The best or nothing.

No I did:

Manual 2015 Subaru Forester is also an acceptable answer.

Didn't think about that.

You really gonna pick that with me here? Good choice....

The answer is always B-Body.
Honorable mention is Panther.

Close.. I would get a Jetta or maybe even a Sonata for cross country because it's more comfortable. If you were asking without the cross country trip it would be something completly different though.

Chevy SSR with the 6 speed. Convertible, manual, 400 HP V8, enormous trunk.

Nope! That's boring!

"What's the best new cross country trip car for a budget buyer?"
emphasis on new

good idea, but that's not a new car

The Pagani Zonda engine and german overengineering will prove you wrong. With the limiter removed it'll probably be just as fast as the 928 too. Did I mention it has double glasing?

Good point, didn't read the title close enough. New car, hmmm not many new cars under 25,000. I'd probably get a strip down Chevy Silverado.
![]() 10/12/2014 at 16:22 |

I have no idea what double glasing is..And I've got German overengineering, so ha!
![]() 10/12/2014 at 16:25 |

Meh, the 600 has more overengineering than your peasant Volkswagen, so ha!

Rubbish, mine handles better than your executive chauffeur.
![]() 10/12/2014 at 16:57 |

Oh, fine.
I'd probably go with a Cruze diesel, but a Jetta Sportwagen, Focus hatch, and the Caravan American Value Package would be decent choices.

Pfff, mine will do this all day long while transporting a bunch of dictators heads of state in maximum comfort.

They don't give you a 6-speed in that?
I imagine I'd go for something similar, maybe Ford Focus, not sure on pricing and models available in the states.

If it pleases you...
But did Clarkson grow himself some hair and did he put on a fancy suit when he was reviewing the 928? No. One could say that shit got pretty serious.

Hate hate hate to say...but one of these.

Avenger R/T 3.6
No, I'm not kidding.
This thing has some of the most comfortable seats my ass has ever sat in. The engine has plenty of horsepower to cruise comfortably on the highway and overtake. The stereo has an aux jack to plug my phone in and it sounds amazing. Big enough trunk for all my stuff.
I've taken a road trip and one and it's the perfect car for it.
